Two nights, one pack
A weekend outdoors is the trip where over-packing hurts the least and teaches the most. Take what you think you need the first time, then note on the way home what never left the bag.
Almost everyone comes back with too many clothes and not enough water capacity.
Buy for the shoulder seasons
Gear that only works in perfect summer conditions gets used a handful of weekends a year. A layer system that handles a cold morning and a warm afternoon roughly triples the number of trips a purchase pays for.
In practice that means one breathable mid layer and one genuinely windproof shell, rather than a single heavy jacket.
The parts worth not economising on
Footwear, sleep insulation and rain protection are the three failures that end a trip early. Most other things can be improvised, borrowed or endured.
Spend there first, and let the rest of the kit catch up over a season.
