How a product gets shortlisted

We start from a category rather than a product. That means mapping what is available, reading long-term owner reports rather than launch coverage, and noting where the trade-offs actually sit before any individual product is considered.

Only products that survive that pass are shortlisted. Most of what we look at never appears on the site at all.

How a pick gets published

A pick goes live when we can write two sentences about it: who it is for, and who should skip it. If we cannot write the second sentence, the pick is not ready.

Ratings on this site are editorial judgements from our own testing and research. They are not aggregated customer reviews, and we do not present them as such.

Independence

Commission never moves a ranking. Retailers appear next to a product because they carry it, not because of what they pay. We do not accept payment for placement, and we do not send drafts to manufacturers for approval.

Corrections and updates

Guides carry the date they were last reviewed. When a category moves — a new model, a discontinued line, a price shift that changes the recommendation — the page is updated and the date changes with it.
